DSP Comments on the East Area Plan

An important step toward realizing the vision and goals embodied in Blueprint Denver is the development of more detailed plans through Denver’s neighborhood planning initiative. Recently the City released the latest draft neighborhood plan for the East Area. We’ve read closely through the plan, and found a lot to like. We are pleased to see that many aspects of the draft East Area Plan will support the creation of more people-friendly streets, consistent with similar elements in the recently updated Comprehensive Plan and Blueprint Denver. The DSP strongly endorses the measurable goals and policies outlined within the area wide mobility recommendations of the EAP.

To further strengthen the area wide mobility recommendations in the East Area Plan, the DSP recommends the following changes and additions:

  • Prioritize identifying public funding and construction solutions for new sidewalks.
  • Increase the 2040 goal for people in the East Area walking, biking, and taking transit and further reduce the 2040 single occupancy vehicle trip goal.
  • Move feasibility studies to the short term.
  • Prioritize physically separated pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
  • Include more north/south bicycle facilities to increase connectivity within the East Area.
